  Take a Sonata pill just before going to bed, or after you have gone to bed and are unable to sleep. It will help you fall asleep. Do not take Sonata with or after a high-fat meal. To cut down on waking side effects, take the medication after you are in bed and are able to sleep for at least four hours. Do not take Sonata for longer than ten days without your doctor's consent. If your sleep disturbances continue longer than this, talk to your doctor about it. Use Sonata according the prescription instructions. Do not take a larger dose, or take it more often or for longer than prescribed. Sonata can be habit forming, so do not suddenly stop taking it without your doctor's knowledge.

  Sonata studies show a slight occurrence of mild side effects such as drowsiness, headache, or upset stomach and nausea. Other more serious side effects include loss of coordination, weakness, muscle or joint pain, or dizziness. If you experience extreme side effects such as mental or mood changes, persistent trouble sleeping, memory problems, loss of appetite, tingling of the hands or feet, rash, itching, tremors, eye/ear problems, fast/slow/irregular pulse, chest pain, trouble breathing, blood in the stool, unusual thirst, or change in amount of urine, notify your doctor immediately.

  Before using Sonata, your doctor needs to know about your complete medical history, including liver disease, allergies, mental/mood problems (such as depression), lung/breathing problems, alcohol use or drug dependence. Do not drink alcohol while using Sonata since it may amplify the dizziness or drowsiness. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery. Some have problems sleeping for a few nights after quitting Sonata therapy. If sleep disorders continue, talk to your doctor about them. This medication should only be used with caution by the elderly, since they may have heightened sensitivity to the medication. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor before using Sonata. Sonata does pass into breast milk; breastfeeding women should not use Sonata.

You should also tell your doctor about anything causing drowsiness such as sedatives, anti-anxiety drugs, psychiatric medications (e.g., thioridazine), other medicines for sleep, tranquilizers, narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), muscle relaxers, anti-seizure medications (e.g., phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine), or antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.g., diphenhydramine). Check labels of your medications, especially cold and cough remedies, since many of them contain antihistamines like diphenhydramine. Speak with our pharmacist about taking these safely. Never suddenly stop using Sonata without your doctors knowledge.
