Prevacid Uses?
This medication blocks acid in the stomach. It is used to treat ulcers, esophagitis and conditions due to high acid secretion.
Prevacid Directions?
This medication is taken by mouth usually once a day one hour before a meal as directed. In certain conditions the medication may be prescribed twice a day. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not open, crush or chew them unless you have esophageal (throat) Problems or have difficulty swallowing in which case you may take the drug after opening the capsules and sprinkling over soft, easy-to-swallow foods like applesauce and swallowing small amounts without chewing. Take this as prescribed. Do not increase your dose, take this more often than directed or stop taking this without first consulting your doctor. Significantly less drug will be absorbed if taken after a meal rather than before eating.
Prevacid Side Effects?
When taking Prevacid, you may experience nausea or stomach pain. If these side effects are persistent or bothersome, call your doctor. Other more serious side effects include diarrhea, muscle pain, changes in stool color, chest pain, stomach pain, rapid heartbeat, breathing trouble, mood changes, or vision changes. Call your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. If you feel that you are having an allergic reaction to Prevacid, you should also get medical attention. These symptoms include difficulty breathing, itching, swelling, or dizziness.
Prevacid Warnings?
Before taking Prevacid, let your doctor know about all other medications you are taking, including ampicillin, sucralfate, theophylline, iron, digoxin, or ketoconazole. Never begin a new medication or stop taking an existing one without your doctor's knowledge. Prevacid may cause an allergic reaction if you have a sensitivity to Omeprazole/Lansoprazole.
Prevacid Drug Interactions?
When taken at the same time as other drugs, Prevacid can cause a reduction in the effectiveness of those drugs. For example, if you take sucralfate (Carafate), you should take them at least thirty minutes apart, of the amount of Prevacid you absorb will be limited. Other drugs in this category include digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), ketoconazole (Nizoral), ampicillin (Omnipen, Principen), and iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, Femiron). Talk to your doctor about any medications you are taking.
Prevacid Missed Dose?
Prevacid should only be taken according to a regular dosing schedule. If you forget a treatment, take it as soon as you remember, then return to your normal routine. Be careful not double your dose of Prevacid.
Prevacid Storage?
Prevacid should be stored out of the reach of children. It should be kept in a place free of moisture and sunlight, and at room temperature.
Anything Else I Should Know About Prevacid?
Prevacid decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
