Prescription Famvir Drug Information
Famvir Uses?
Famvir treats infections that are caused by the herpes virus, including genital herpes, cold sores (in people with HIV), and shingles. Famvir interferes with the growth and spread of herpes infections. This means your infections will heal faster and you will experience fewer outbreaks because your body will be better able to fight the virus.
Famvir Directions?
Follow the Famvir instructions carefully when using this medication. If you read the instructions and don't understand any part of it, make sure to ask questions until it is clear to you.
When you first notice blisters, burning, or pain caused by herpes related infections, begin taking Famvir.
Famvir can be taken either with or without food. Taking it with food will help prevent an upset stomach. Always drink a full glass of water with Famvir.
You should keep taking Famvir for as long as your doctor has prescribed it, even if you feel that your symptoms have improved. This will help make sure that your herpes, chicken pox, or shingles have completely healed.
Keep your sores from chicken pox, shingles, or herpes virus clean and dry. Wearing loose clothing can help prevent irritation of sores.
Famvir Side Effects?
Studies show that some occasionally experience side effects while taking Famvir. These might include tingling in your hands or feet, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, a headache, or itching. If these are persistent, talk to your doctor about it.
Seek immediate medical care if you have an allergic reaction to Famvir, including closing of your throat; hives; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or difficulty breathing.
Famvir Warnings?
The herpes virus spreads from person to person easily, and can be passed while you are taking Famvir or other medications. This medicine does not prevent the spread of herpes. Do not allow your partner to touch infected areas. Avoid sexual activity or wear a latex condom to prevent spreading the virus.
Famvir Drug Interactions?
Taking Famvir together with Probenecid (Benemid) may cause serious side effects. If you are taking this medication, your doctor may adjust your dose or arrange for additional monitoring.
There are also other medications that interact with Famvir. Tell your doctor about all other medications and over the counter products you use, including herbal remedies.
Famvir Missed Dose?
You should follow your scheduled dose times carefully. Do not try to make up missed doses of Famvir unless you are following doctor's orders. If you accidentally skip a dose, just resume your normal dosing schedule.
Famvir Storage?
Famvir capsules can break down when exposed to moisture, so do not store them in places where they may become wet, such as a bathroom or near a kitchen sink. The tablets should be in a cool and dark place. Be certain to keep the prescription where children cannot reach it. If you have expired prescriptions, safely discard any remaining medication.
Anything Else I Should Know About Famvir?
No one should take Famvir if they know they are allergic to penciclovir (Denavir), unless a doctor specifically prescribes it.
Those with a history of kidney disease should talk to their doctor before taking Famvir. He or she may recommend a different dosage or supplemental monitoring.
Famvir is not believed to be harmful to unborn babies. It is in FDA category B, so talk to your doctor about using it if you are pregnant.
If you are currently breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using Famvir. It's not known if the medicine is passed in breast milk.
The medication is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. There are not enough studies on its usefulness or safety for children.
